The championship of this 1984 refers to it beingness Jack DeJohnette's work solid unit of measurement album of sorts. His woman raise had died exactly about this fourth dimension together with he composed this set inward her retentiveness together with dedicated i rails ("New Orleans Strut") to his father. Jack DeJohnette is fifty-fifty pictured on the embrace amongst his married adult woman together with daughter, together with numerous old work solid unit of measurement photos grace the within spread.
This version of Special Edition had a powerful three-horn front end line, amongst John Purcell on alto together with soprano saxophones, David Murray on tenor together with Howard Johnson on tuba together with baritone sax. The opening number, "Ahmad the Terrible" features a folkish tune over a rollicking rhythmic base, calling to hear some of the plant past times Moondog. The set's i embrace is Thelonious Monk's "Monk's Mood," hither arranged amongst an extended together with gloriously laid-back opening past times the 3 horns, amongst the drums together with bass joining inward later a few minutes.
I learned from the liner notes that this album was meant to commemorate Jack's slow woman raise inward an endeavour to imbue a fourth dimension of mourning amongst the spirit of joy together with celebration. In my opinion, this is achieved! Many of the tunes accept natural language inward cheek themes together with brand y'all smile. At the same time, the musicianship is bright together with manages for the most part to audio fresh fifty-fifty later thirty years. When the 70s audio appears equally such, it is all the same amongst panache together with cool, thus it serves equally a monument to that fourth dimension catamenia equally well. Highly recommended.- By Casper Paludan
This is a real special selection, played amongst genuine involvement, inspiration together with commitment, equally a felt homage inward retentiveness of Jack's mother.
Despite the years this album maintains that behave upon of remarkable distinction. Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 genuine run exactly about the essential roots of the beginnings of this genre.
It's useless to speak nigh the magnificence of this connoted drum' s superstar. The residual of the squad plays amongst enraptured bliss. Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 celebration of the music past times itself. -

He's a swell drummer non to refer pianist together with the tuba is an interesting add-on to the overall sound. Monk's Mood is a swell slice equally are his master copy sounds. -

All the songs on this CD are good, but Ahmad the Terrible is an outstanding function of jazz. I detect it hard to explicate why I honey this slice thus much - it thus real unique. Every jazz lover should accept this CD inward their collection. - By Dubarnik

Listening to a jazz playlist of mine on shuffle on my bag computer, I had the pleasance of hearing "Third World Anthem," from "Album Album", a 1984 loose past times Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition. I initiative off began to hear to jazz extensively when I was a DJ at KZSU, the pupil radio station at Stanford University. I initiative off did a jazz exhibit inward the summertime of 1983. When I started, I knew adjacent to nothing. But I knew Miles Davis's "Kind of Blue," together with John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things," thus I started "So What" from the one-time together with cued upwards the championship rails from the latter, together with wondered what to play later that.
Jazz albums accept proficient lists of personnel, thus I went together with got albums past times all the sidemen on those 2 albums. One of the albums was past times McCoy Tyner (pianist on the Coltrane album), together with i of the sidemen on that album was Jack DeJohnette. I don't retrieve what Tyner album it was, but I vaguely retrieve it beingness a pianoforte trio, which agency it was almost sure "Supertrios" from 1977.
In whatever case, this purpose of sidemen to detect to a greater extent than records to play had rapidly led me to Jack DeJohnette, together with when I began to only play jazz inward my DJ'ing the next January, his function was a staple of my shows, together with when "Album Album" came out that year, I played it to death, peculiarly "Festival," "New Orleans Strut," together with "Third World Anthem."
I spent exactly over a calendar week inward New York exactly later Thanksgiving inward 1984, together with I went to come across Special Edition several times during their week-long gig at the Blue Note. David Murray had already move i of my favorite saxophone players past times then, but I was exactly equally impressed past times John Purcell together with Howard Johnson. Rufus Reid is the bassist on the album, but he was busy elsewhere, thus Cecil McBee was replacing him, together with I retrieve him equally beingness peculiarly great. And DeJohnette was, equally always, merely a wonder on the drums.
"Album Album": i of the greatest records of the 1980s, to my ears. (Up at that topographic point amongst "Seeds of Time," past times the magnificent Dave Kingdom of the Netherlands Quintet.) -
