GRP Records is an American jazz tape company, owned past times Universal Music Group too operates through its Verve Music Group. The company's holler has had dissimilar meanings. In its early on days, it stood for "Grusin/Rosen Productions," later on the founders. By the middle 1990s, later on Grusin too Rosen left the company, GRP used the marketing slogan "Great Records Period."
Dave Grusin, a pianist too producer, too Larry Rosen, a drummer too recording engineer, established a production companionship inwards 1976 that recorded nontraditional jazz musicians similar Earl Klugh too Lee Ritenour. When they founded GRP inwards 1978, they continued to concentrate on this fusion of jazz, pop, too rock.[1]
GRP was distributed past times Arista until 1982. It was independent until 1987, when it made a bargain alongside MCA Distributing. In 1990 MCA bought GRP, giving the latter role of the catalogues of Impulse! too Decca, which GRP began to reissue on CD. New recordings at GRP included music past times David Benoit, Michael Brecker, Gary Burton, Billy Cobham, Chick Corea, Eddie Daniels, Mercer Ellington, Kevin Eubanks, Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Haslip, Eric Marienthal, Gerry Mulligan, John Patitucci, the Rippingtons, Arturo Sandoval, Diane Schuur, too Dave Valentin.[1]
GRP's role of Soundstream too digital recording contributed to the success of the label. Grusin's album Mountain Dance (1979) was 1 of the earliest all-digital recordings exterior of classical music.
